Nice one! It is surprising how fast you loose height in that field
on our class of gliders.I always find myself landing further back
than I intended. I think you did exactly the right thing, a low
altitude greater than 180 degree slow turn to land in the wheat
would have been much more risky. I think the route to the right of
the outcrop is better for getting to the cliffs instead of going
over the chapel because you have better bomb out options but I know
you were advised to take the route over the chapel by much more
experienced pilots than me! (These sky Gods sometimes forget what a
crappy glide and penetration we have)
Some? I was working up to a shed-load.
Definately this was a case where local knowledge would have helped
a lot. Darren was just a bit early on drifting backwards and it
seems to me he got into descending air. I suspect that the hedge
wasn't a choice, but it worked out OK for him and it's definately
something to bear in mind for my next crash (due any time soon on
past performance).
Yes it was a nice soft hedge, no damage to me or the glider, I was
so sure I would easily make the landing field, had loads of height,
I just bubbled across. As you have said Carole if I had stayed more
forward still in lifting air I would have been fine or even with my
course but added some speed I would have cover the ground, but
there live and learn to fly another day.
Cheers Darren
Love the commentary especially when you realized that you were
running short, glad you were not hurt though, Finnished my CP now
so hopefully will catch up on a hill soon.
Well done Ken, I suppose you will be on the downs every northerly
day? Look for ward to seeing you there in the summer. I have not
been back that way since I have passed, due mainly to the wind. It
will be great to fly there properly now I have a bit more of an
idea what I'm doing :-)
